Frederick Douglas-the Great Abolitionist and former slave-described in his autobiography a situation not unfamiliar to our dealings today. He described his Master as purposefully aiding his slaves in extreme overindulgence in times of gaiety and celebration such that when that time had concluded, the slaves would happily return to their oppressive lot, for it seemed the better of the two evils. Douglas’ understanding of the tactic was to make Freedom a burden to the slave such that he would not be in want or in need of it. In other words, his quality of life was well established and predictable whereas the life of a freedman was tumultuous, unpredictable and dangerous, therefore undesirable. A Steel Cage, they would prefer. I say to you today, a Steel Cage of Universal Health Care is but that! No amount of flowery rhetoric will change the fact that freedoms must be torn from ones flesh to accommodate such a level of control. Once instituted, it will be a steel cage from which escaping-as shall be necessary-would be tumultuous and disastrous for this nation. Reverse this course, not today, not yesterday but forever and all times.

The right to ones health is the right to ones being! This is not new to our great land. Once we had Health Care without choice. Men of all nations past endured it as well as those on this soil. In the days of Slavery, was it not the Master who tended to his property as he saw fit? Was it not the Master who decided by which Physician the slave shall be mended? Was it not the Master who when he felt the injury too severe or the mending too expensive, did he not let go of such property in his own interest?

I say to you today that if this monstrosity passes and becomes law, we will have the same Master by another name. Anyone who seeks to control your life by means of your condition is but the same Master of old. And the Freedoms that we fight for today are the same Freedoms that we longed for then. The Freedom to Be! The Freedom to choose ones’ own destiny!

Let Liberty be the order of the day!

It seems that the black population has decided that it is time to give up on the “Dream”.  Is it because the replacement for universal freedom is touted by a very charismatic, young politician whose “skin looks like mine”? Or is it that they have just given up the fight?  Universal Healthcare is a throwback to a time when Government wanted to control life rather than protect it.  I remember learning about an era when the banner march of “Let Freedom Ring” continued into the streets and the mindsets of strong black Americans well after the death of Martin Luther King Jr.  What happened to those freedom cries?  Well, the Left happened. 

The left has perverted the idea of what it is to be black in America.  They have destroyed the strong and powerful lineage of fighters for freedom.  Where have all the leaders gone such as Crispus Attucks, Frederick Douglass, and Martin Luther King Jr., all who fought against the tyranny of Government in order to secure inexorable freedoms for their people? Where are those leaders today?  They are on the Right.

Believe it or not, the only ones currently fighting for the same freedoms that our hero’s of the past fought for are on the right.  The same ones that are called racist are the ones determined to keep our freedoms sacred. 

In 1639, Virginia instituted a law that allowed the population to carry firearms.  The only exception to the law were Negroes. 

Act X. All persons except Negroes are to be provided with arms and ammunitions or be fined at the pleasure of the governor and council.

This one act began a paradigm shift sending the Negro race into the realm of inferiority.  There were Royalty and Nobles, Gentlemen and Servants but not Blacks and Whites until the demarcation line was established.  Negroes and only blacks were no longer allowed to protect themselves with arms.  The freedoms that Negroes enjoyed were being stripped away.

Since that time, the Negro population moved from indentured servant where they could work for 3-7 years and then gain there freedom and land to the station of a lifetime of slavery.  Freedoms were then completely eroded and did not fully return for another 314 years.  It was not until 1964 did the enforcement of the myriad of proclamations, Constitutional Amendments and Civil Rights Laws became a reality.  Yet today, the black population seems content in giving some of those freedoms back. 

The foundation of black America is intertwined in the history of the slave state, Black Codes and Jim Crow Laws.  Why is that foundation crumbling today?  Just as the Master controlled the Health Care of the slave, so too now we blacks ask for the same prescription once again.  Where is the progress?  Where is the fortitude to go it alone and fight for ones freedom from the Government? 

The left has always had contempt for the black population, maybe unknowingly but present nonetheless.  They are perceived as the saviors when in actuality they are the destroyers.  Universal Health Care is just one more example of the left determining that minorities are an inferior race.  They justify their actions by claiming benevolence towards the poor.  In truth, their actions justify a long held leftist paradigm that minorities can not take care of themselves.  Minorities, as a race, are “inept”, “unable to advance” and “inferior” unless they are given a leg up, a subsidy or some kind of entitlement.  Personally, I find it demeaning and offensive.

Frederick Douglass once spoke to a group of abolitionists in 1865 about “What the Black Man Wants”.  He was very clear in his speech and said the following about slaves: 

…I know that we are inferior to you in some things–virtually inferior. We walk about you like dwarfs among giants. Our heads are scarcely seen above the great sea of humanity. The Germans are superior to us; the Irish are superior to us; the Yankees are superior to us; they can do what we cannot, that is, what we have not hitherto been allowed to do. But while I make this admission, I utterly deny, that we are originally, or naturally, or practically, or in any way, or in any important sense, inferior to anybody on this globe…

This charge of inferiority is an old dodge. It has been made available for oppression on many occasions…

…I understand the anti-slavery societies of this country to be based on two principles,–first, the freedom of the blacks of this country; and, second, the elevation of them. Let me not be misunderstood here. I am not asking for sympathy at the hands of abolitionists, sympathy at the hands of any. I think the American people are disposed often to be generous rather than just. I look over this country at the present time, and I see Educational Societies, Sanitary Commissions, Freedmen’s Associations, and the like,–all very good: but in regard to the colored people there is always more that is benevolent, I perceive, than just, manifested towards us. What I ask for the Negro is not benevolence, not pity, not sympathy, but simply justice. The American people have always been anxious to know what they shall do with us. Gen. Banks was distressed with solicitude as to what he should do with the Negro. Everybody has asked the question, and they learned to ask it early of the abolitionists, “What shall we do with the Negro?” I have had but one answer from the beginning. Do nothing with us! Your doing with us has already played the mischief with us. Do nothing with us! If the apples will not remain on the tree of their own strength, if they are worm eaten at the core, if they are early ripe and disposed to fall, let them fall! I am not for tying or fastening them on the tree in any way, except by nature’s plan, and if they will not stay there, let them fall. And if the Negro cannot stand on his own legs, let him fall also. All I ask is, give him a chance to stand on his own legs! Let him alone! If you see him on his way to school, let him alone, don’t disturb him! If you see him going to the dinner table at a hotel, let him go! If you see him going to the ballot- box, let him alone, don’t disturb him! If you see him going into a work-shop, just let him alone,–your interference is doing him a positive injury. Gen. Banks’ “preparation” is of a piece with this attempt to prop up the Negro. Let him fall if he cannot stand alone! If the Negro cannot live by the line of eternal justice…the fault will not be yours, it will be his who made the Negro, and established that line for his government. Let him live or die by that.

In the slave state, the care of ones own health was especially sacred.  It was the most protected asset of Negroes because it represented the only wealth that one had.  It was the only thing of value that a slave still retained within himself.  Even if he had no freedoms, at least he had his own body to do with as he pleases.  If he became injured, it was a cat and mouse game to avoid the care provided by the “Master”.  The “Master” could invade that which was most sacred to a slave, his body.  Today, the black population readily gives up that Freedom and that Right.

There have also been numerous cases of the benevolent government structure sanctioning experiments against those of an inferior race.  The Tuskegee Syphilis Study in Alabama allowed black men to wallow in disease for years only to view the effects of the disease on their health.  The men thought they were actually being treated when they were being given aspirin.  The study ran from 1932 to 1972.  Nurse Eunice Rivers, a black women was the linchpin of the study since she gained the trust of the poor black men.  She was the only member of the study to remain for the duration.  Nearly 399 men died in the experiment after succumbing to horrific maladies.  The government compensated the families and survivors with $9 million dollars and free health care for life.  There are countless examples in the annuls of history referring to the brutality perpetrated on unsuspecting minorities in the name of medical progress.  Why don’t we remember these events before we decide to hand over our health care to a Health Care Choices Commissioner appointed by the President?  Do I really think that President Obama has malevolent intentions with Single Payer Universal Health Care?  Not in the least.  But that’s not the point.  I don’t trust government and neither should you.  President Obama may be in office for another seven years at the most, who then will be in control of your health care?  Whether you are on the right or left, you should be concerned.  Especially if you are black, with our history, we should be concerned. 

Today, the black population has a 25% poverty rate.  That is 3 times more that the white population.  Even in the best of Universal Health Care systems such as the one in Sweden, the care becomes rationed and the costs increase over time.  Everyone is forced to visit their local Doctor and you can not move your care from town to town.  You are stuck in your local.  This saves money but it also leads to rationed care.  When the premise for the overall redesign of Health Care is about saving money above better care, those on the lower rung of the ladder get hurt the most.  Do you really think that subsidized care will be equal to the care that is not?  When you don’t pay for it yourself, you have little to no rights.  Beggars can’t be choosers!  It may not be in the bill or law that may pass but it will be the understood truth.  You can’t expect equal care if you don’t pay for it equally.  In this Health Care Utopia, who gets to try out the new drugs that come out on the market, who gets to use the lesser effective yet cheaper drugs, who will get the most needed transplant, those that pay into the system or those that get paid by the system? 

At least today you have a choice.  At least today you can build a relationship with your doctor to pay less for your care.  At least today, you may be able to barter for your care rather than paying cash.  At least today you have choices and options.  With Universal Health Care, the Health Care Choices Commissioner, appointed by the President will determine your choices for you.  It may save money, but it is not Freedom.

Chief Carey and Officer Carter-The Battle Royal

I have spent the last few weeks dealing with the issue of racial profiling.  Officer Carter of the Melbourne Police was slandered by his superior in an ongoing criminal case.  He was called a racist.  It has been my experience that the charge is not only false and unwarranted by antithetical to the mans’ character.  By all accounts, he is a pillar in the community and I mean all communities.  He is well loved and thought of by all colors of individuals and he has even helped a few make it through college using his own funds.  He is definitely not a racist.

So why would a superior slander him as such?  Could it be jealousy, greed, power or all of the above?  I don’t really know but what I do know is this.  The charge alone will devastate a mans’ life.  Officer Carter is a dedicated police officer and has been his entire career but the actions of a few individuals have been able to ruin that in the eyes of the people.  At every turn, I see in newspapers and here on the radio about the charge of racism that has been laid upon this man.  His life will never be the same and yet those who have laid the charge merely express an apology for the slander and get off free and clear.  I think it is a travesty. 

Those that lay false claims such as racism upon another and subsequently ruin his reputation should face some kind of repercussion.  It is wholly unacceptable for a person in power to use that bully pulpit to destroy an individual in the eyes of the people.  Officer Carter is a good man.  Those who have laid the charge are no better than the actual racist themselves.  They threaten the good progress that society has made with respect to race relations and they continue to create false barriers between good people of our society.  They should be made to pay for their indiscretions.  By mentioning 2 words; racial profiling, they’ve ruined a reputation and set back race relations an inexorable amount. 

I fight everyday to bring about a Colorblind Society but when you have racially insensitive individuals in positions of power going around and singlehandedly setting back race relations, I get mighty upset.  They should be castigated and publically shamed for their actions.  I hope to see that come about.  The Melbourne Chief of Police and the City Manager should never have crossed that racial line!

The Green Goblin-Fooling the Urban Community

Van Jones has been awarded the NAACP Image Award and I could not disagree more! 

Van Jones is not misunderstood and he certainly is not the Image that I would like for my children to emulate.  He is an avowed Communist, Anarchist and Black Nationalist.  He purports to fight for social justice; all the while he is actually perpetuating economic justice-socialism.  The social equality he seeks is through the Green Jobs movement which is mandated and subsidized by the government (taxpayer wealth).  That’s called fascism.  As a person of color myself, I must admit, he is a disappointment.

The house of cards that he and his ilk are building centers on the Green Movement.  In his Green Jobs Act of 2007, the recipients of cash from the passage of the Law, the ones who will benefit from taxpayer dollars are:   industry employers sympathetic to the green cause, labor organizations, community organizations, educators, parolees and High School dropouts.  To the tune of $125 million a year from the aforementioned law and $500 million from the Stimulus, Van Jones has amassed a war chest to inculcate the poor urban masses to his thinking.  They will be trained in the new Green Economy.  The only problem is that the Green Economy does not exist.  Well, it does exist, just nearly completely subsidized by the taxpayers. 

You see, the house of cards is built on an idea, not on economics.  We are spending money training our poor urban men and women into a trade that isn’t even economically viable yet.  It has not even been tested on its own in the U.S. It is capital intensive, and currently without demand.  Innovation will not come from government mandates; it will come from the private sector when the public demands it through its purchase power.  Economically, “Green Jobs” is a loser.  That’s why it is heavily subsidized.  It is basically welfare for companies that kill jobs in efficient industries for ones in inefficient industries. 

What will all this lead to:  Higher Costs, Job losses, Training for inefficient Industries subsidized by Government, the Green Industry will be run solely by Labor Unions and inner city community organizers who employ high school drop outs and parolees.  It will kill traditional jobs.  It will grow government.  As cost increase, it will send jobs overseas.  It will increase federal spending and exert new government controls over the private sector.

I have a problem with Mr. Jones because he does not build his foundation upon sound principles and he’s taking the urban community down with him.  I happen to like the idea of Green Jobs.  I just want the jobs to be economically viable jobs.  The urban communities should be reorganized based on sound economic and free market principles.  With free enterprise, you will create long lasting jobs that are in demand.  You can help individuals create a legacy for their families.  Entrepreneurship and innovation are spurred from necessary demand, not from government intervention.  Mr. Jones is not helping the community find the best path out of poverty for themselves; he in turn is telling them that there is only one way out, his way, the Green Way.  All or your eggs will be in his basket, I hope he doesn’t drop them.

I am a descendant of the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere-Haiti; I would say that from a visual perspective, I am black.  I am also married to a former Swedish model (former Mrs. Sweden 1999).  We have 4 beautiful children; are working on our fifth and have been married for nearly 14 years.  By the way, she is also outraged.  I have spent most of my life shying away from most involvements and endeavors that are isolationist and black.  As a matter of fact, it wasn’t until I was 14 years old that I actually understood that there was a perceived difference between the races.  Black and white had never been taught to me, I still maintain that same attitude.  There is no difference between black and white.  There should be no implied difference between black and white.  The world would be a better place if the descriptive terms of being black or white did not exist.

Most people don’t understand that the notion of applying value to an individual based on the color of their skin is ludicrous and absurd and immoral.  Let me explain.  The first time in history that being black or white served any real purpose was in 1691.  Virginia passed the first anti-miscegenation law; 

That for the time to come, whatsoever English or other white man or woman being free shall intermarry with a negroe, mulatto, or Indian man or woman bond or free shall within three months after such marriage be banished and removed from this dominion forever. 

That was the first but by no means the last.  Should Tiger be banished from this dominion?  The laws continue;

And if a free christian white woman shall have such bastard child, by a negro, or mulatto, for every such offence, she shall, within one month after her delivery of such bastard child, pay to the church-wardens for the time being, of the parish wherein such child shall be born, for the use of the said parish fifteen pounds current money of Virginia, or be by them sold for five years to the use aforesaid: And in both the said cases, the church-wardens shall bind the said child to be a servant, until it shall be of thirty one years of age…Virginia 1705

Now we get the children involved in this barbaric practice.  But how do they make sure that it is enforced and discouraged at the same time?

And for a further prevention of that abominable mixture and spurious issue, which hereafter may increase in this her majesty’s colony and dominion, as well by English, and other white men and women intermarrying with negros or mulattos, as by their unlawful coition with them…

Be it enacted, by the authority aforesaid, and it is hereby enacted, That whatsoever English, or other white man or woman, being free, shall intermarry with a negro or mulatto man or woman, bond or free, shall, by judgment of the county court, be committed to prison, and there remain, during the space of six months, without bail or mainprize; and shall forfeit and pay ten pounds current money of Virginia, to the use of the parish, as aforesaid. Virginia 1705

Now we’re talking, jail time for not staying within your own race.  But why not just get married anyway?

That no minister of the church of England, or other minister, or person whatsoever, within this colony and dominion, shall hereafter wittingly presume to marry a white man with a negro or mulatto woman; or to marry a white woman with a negro or mulatto man, upon pain of forfeiting and paying, for every such marriage the sum of ten thousand pounds of tobacco… Virginia 1705

So now we have the ministers telling the public that mixing of races is illegal, immoral and they will not take part in it.  But why did this come about in the first place? 

The British colonies were the first and only place on earth to distinguish people based on the color of their skin.  Then why socially engineer a society under what we now realize to be an immoral practice?  POWER-pure and simple.  You see, the elite ruling class and legislatures realized that in order to control the masses, they had to design the society to their liking.  Many rebellions by servants and slaves prior to 1691 were perpetrated by both poor whites and blacks.  The elites realized that they had a problem on their hands-they could not control the people if they continued to mix and create mulatto children.  The society would be based on a small elite class and a large mix of white, black and mulatto class.  Their fear was that if they did not split the people and create races of black and whites, with one being superior to the other, the people could successfully revolt based on class and not race.  Slavery would be impossible to maintain due to the fact that many slaves would not be black.  You see, Africans and Europeans mixed in abundance prior to this episode.  Racism had not been created yet because the idea of race did not exist.  

So why is this important today?  Because anti-miscegenation laws did not become unconstitutional until 1967!  From 1691 to 1967, laws were written, enforced and preached upon in churches to denounce the mixing of races, that’s 275 years of segregation.  It’s important because these laws and ideas were created not by Africans of the day nor by poor Europeans but by social elites and plantation owners to control society.  Every time I here anybody espousing the same immorality, I grit my teeth because they are merely justifying the absurdity passed upon us by evil, vile and putrid men of hatred.

I find solace in quotes by Martin Luther King JR. and Frederick Douglas such as;

Let us be dissatisfied until men and women, however black they may be, will be judged on the basis of the content of their character and not on the basis of the color of their skin… And men will recognize that out of one blood God made all men to dwell upon the face of the earth. Let us be dissatisfied until that day when nobody will shout “White Power!” – when nobody will shout “Black Power!” – but everybody will talk about God’s power and human power. MLK 

Nature has two voices, the one is high, the other low; one is in sweet accord with reason and justice, and the other apparently at war with both. The more men really know of the essential nature of things, and on of the true relation of mankind, the freer they are from prejudices of every kind. The child is afraid of the giant form of his own shadow. This is natural, but he will part with his fears when he is older and wiser. So ignorance is full of prejudice, but it will disappear with enlightenment…  FD

Racial dignity requires that people treat me and every other black with an eye on the past.  It requires people to feel guilty about past transgressions and therefore pay up today.  Being black would require that others think of me first as a black man before thinking of me as an American man.  If your character is deserving of my respect then I will keep you by me side.  If your character is suspect, I have no time for you!! 

It is time for universal equality.  If I want to be treated based on the content of my character, then I need to be willing to do the same in return.  The only possible way that this can be accomplished is by not delving into the past and apply those transgressions onto the people of today.  I can not and must not see people as part of a race but as individuals ready to be read like a book.  I judge not the cover.  Therefore, I can not consider myself “black” in order that my cover not also be judged.

Abolishing the color line, initially established in defense of slavery, is necessary to advance the nation from the guilty remunerations dispensed as a result of racial dignity and rise to the higher level of universal equality only obtained through the ideal of human dignity.  As Frederick Douglass once stated in a speech in 1869;

 “I know of no rights of race superior to the rights of humanity…”. 

My wife said this to me the other day:  The blacker you are, the whiter I become, where does that leave our children?  It’s a true statement folks, let’s drop the color line.  It’s immoral, self serving and un-Christian like!
